Abstract
Introduction: Patients undergoing chemotherapy for small cell
lung cancer commonly experience adverse effects from treatment. Many of these symptoms occur outside of routine hospital followup
appointments where the opportunity to intervene at an
earlier stage may be missed and therefore may result in adverse
outcomes. Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are symptoms or a
patient-perceived health status that are reported directly by the
patient without interpretation by a clinician or anyone else. Use
of electronic reporting of PROs for symptom monitoring improves
survival and health-related quality of life compared to usual care.
This may be due to early responsiveness to real-time PROs that
prevent adverse downstream consequences. Nurses play a vital role
in responding to PROs in order to provide symptom management
counseling or referral for supportive medications and chemotherapy
dose modifications.
Methods: This study is a pilot to develop our knowledge and efficacy
around the PRO's Tool, with a proposal to assess 20 patients with
a small cell lung cancer diagnosis. The pilot aims to recruit all 20
patients to the study by early 2019. Proposed intervention: This pilot
project aims to assess the feasibility of a symptom questionnaire
comprising of nine (9) key symptoms experienced by lung cancer
patients adapted into lay-language from the CTCAE (Common
Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events) (Basch, Lancet Oncology
2006) Proposed cohort: Patients with a diagnosis of extensive-stage
small cell lung cancer (newly diagnosed or recurrent) who have
consented to commence platinum-based chemotherapy Ability to
read and understand English
Results: The study aims to show that the use of PROs will help to
prevent the incidence of adverse events for patients undergoing
treatment for extensive stage small cell lung cancer.
Conclusion: The findings will be disseminated and a framework
further developed for use with other non lung cancer patients.
